Barberry (Berberis) is a perennial ornamental shrub with dense branching, thorny stems and attractive foliage in shades of green, yellow, red or purple, depending on the species and cultivar. It produces small yellow or orange-yellow flowers in spring, typically lasting 2–3 weeks, followed by red berries in many species during autumn; mature plants may reach 0.3–3 metres in height, making them suitable for hedges, garden borders and ornamental landscaping.
